Hamburg, August 29, 2024 – With the corporate merger next Monday, HGV Hamburger Gesellschaft für Vermögens- und Beteiligungsmanagement mbH (Hamburg Asset and Investment Management Company) is taking a decisive step in the reorganization of the city's infrastructure. The two existing separate companies will merge to form Hamburger Energienetze GmbH (Hamburg Energy Networks Ltd.). This merger combines the expertise of approximately 2,300 employees and creates an integrated network operator responsible for supplying around 1.4 million households and the Hamburg economy.
A Central Pillar of Hamburg's Climate Policy
The new group forms the operational backbone for the city's decarbonization. In addition to operating and digitizing over 37,000 kilometers of electricity and gas pipelines, the development of the Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network (HH-WIN) is a key focus. The merger will allow for synergies within the group and more efficient management of the energy infrastructure expansion. This is essential to meet the increasing demands of electromobility and the energy transition, as well as the transformation of industry, from a single source.
Strong Position within the Group
Hamburg's Finance Senator Dr. Andreas Dressel and HGV Managing Director Dr. Isabella Niklas emphasize the strategic importance for the municipal group: The merger mobilizes necessary resources for the transformation tasks and secures skilled workers for the long term. "The corporate merger, spearheaded by HGV, lays the foundation for the operational and cultural integration of the companies," explains Dr. Niklas. The company launches with an experienced four-member management team under the new brand mission statement "Making Hamburg Possible Together."
Job Security and Growth
A key aspect of the transaction is comprehensive job security. In close consultation with the social partners, agreements were reached to ensure that no employee is disadvantaged by the merger. On the contrary: To tackle the enormous tasks of digitalization and grid expansion, further staff increases are planned in the medium term. Hamburger Energienetze GmbH is thus positioning itself as a future-proof and attractive employer within the portfolio of public companies.
