Space to live, learn, and breathe
Social housing, modern cultural, sports and educational facilities, attractive office space and a modern trade fair center in the heart of the metropolis – our investments in the real estate & urban development sector create vibrant spaces for living and working in Hamburg. Socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. For present and future generations.
Urban development with perspective
Real estate is the building block for socially responsible and future-oriented urban development. HGV therefore holds stakes in numerous companies in the real estate sector. Their investments in social housing and neighborhood development create livable living spaces for Hamburg's citizens, modern educational and cultural facilities for all generations, and attractive office and exhibition spaces for businesses. In this way, we are setting sustainable trends for the future of the port city.
Investments & impact
The Group's investments are specifically directed towards social housing, modern commercial properties, new urban districts, and the renovation of municipal buildings. We always act with a long-term perspective to ensure balanced and socially diverse neighborhood development for our growing metropolis.
Because: Space for living, learning, and working – all of this is fundamental to Hamburg's future viability. At the same time, the building sector holds enormous potential for reducing CO₂ emissions through an energy and heat transition that benefits everyone. By investing in the energy-efficient renovation of our existing properties, we are actively reducing energy consumption within the Group and thus protecting the climate. In this way, we not only create livable neighborhoods but also make an indispensable contribution to achieving our city's climate goals.
Time for the heating transition
Through targeted investments in energy-efficient renovations and renewable energies, we are developing neighborhoods within the Group that actively advance the energy transition in the building sector. Our companies, especially SAGA, are leading the way nationwide with systematic energy-efficient modernization in social housing. At the same time, we are accelerating the connection to green district heating networks and the use of heat pumps. In this way, we are laying the foundation for a climate-neutral building stock in Hamburg.
Solar power for Hamburg's rooftops
Solar energy is the energy source of the future. It's finding a home on Hamburg's rooftops. Our companies are actively driving the expansion of solar power in the building sector. By 2030, SAGA aims to unlock around 15 percent of the solarization potential of its existing roof surfaces. As part of its solar roof initiative, GMH is leveraging the potential of photovoltaic systems on school roofs. A total of around 100,000 square meters of solar panels are planned for these buildings.
Tenant-landlord model
Hamburg has organized the construction and management of its municipal properties according to the so-called tenant-landlord model. What does that mean? "Tenants" are the institutions that use the properties. For example: schools, cultural institutions or museums, fire departments, or police. The major advantage of this model is that the "tenants" can concentrate fully on their core tasks. Service providers—specialized HGV subsidiaries such as Sprinkenhof, GMH, 1. HIM, or P+F—take care of the construction, renovation, maintenance, and management of the properties.
